East Ave Master Plan Storm Drain
The East Ave. Master Plan Storm Drain consisted of removing the existing pavement and underlying storm drain infrastructure in order to construct approximately 6,700 linear feet of mainline RCP storm drain, with laterals, catch basins, and appurtenances. East Avenue, located on the eastern border of Rancho Cucamonga, is a major arterial for the adjoining communities while providing access the Interstate 15 freeway. The one-mile long storm drain project extended from just north of Baseline Ave. to Foothill Blvd.
In an effort to minimize the impact to the surrounding community, Sully-Miller made an extra effort to complete the job ahead of schedule by utilizing vendors with heavy equipment capable of meeting the accelerated schedule and vigorous specification. Perhaps the most difficult phase of the project is when Sully-Miller had to install 90” RCP under the Interstate 15 overpass- a heavily-travelled thoroughfare to the rest of the United States.
Having skilled and competent crews, Sully-Miller knew that the difficulty in this phase was having equipment capable to excavate material down to the required 24’ depth necessary for placement of the 96” RCP storm drain while assuring that the boom of the excavator didn’t contact the freeway overpass above. As a result, due to limited clearance and restricted workspace, this required our traffic control division to divert traffic off of East Ave. onto supplementary arterial streets. In addition, a change order was issued to Jack and Bore under Baseline Ave. and East Ave. rather than open cut trenching to maintain traffic flow. However, through experienced coordination and partnering with the City of Rancho Cucamonga, City of Fontana, and Caltrans District 8, Sully-Miller and the City of Rancho Cucamonga were successful in completing the project on schedule with a reduced impact to the immediate community.
