Sully-Miller Contracting Company Sponsors Tour of Long Beach May 14, 2016
Continuing a legacy of giving, on May 14th Sully-Miller Contracting Company (SMCC) is a Silver level event sponsor benefiting pediatric cancer research - and an institution very dear to the Sully-Miller Contracting family. The event is the Tour of Long Beach and the beneficiary is Jonathan Jaques Children's Cancer Center at Miller Children's & Women's Hospital of Long Beach.
In 1923, George W. Sully and Earl B. Miller founded Sully-Miller Contracting. And yes, the “Miller” in Miller Children's Hospital is due to the generosity of Earl B. Miller and his wife Lorraine. Although they never had children, the Millers recognized the importance of caring for and treating the needs of children and families throughout Long Beach. In the 1960’s, the Millers’ $1 million pledge kick-started the construction of a hospital devoted to pediatric care - two months later Earl passed away.
Earl never saw the 134-bed Miller Children’s Hospital open in 1970. Loraine continued the Miller legacy when she wrote a check for approximately $13 million to cover the brick-and-mortar expenses for the new hospital. Today, Miller Children's & Women's Hospital Long Beach provides specialized pediatric care for children and young adults, with conditions ranging from common to complex—as well as maternity care for expectant mothers. The hospital’s Jonathan Jaques Children's Cancer Center (JJCCC) cares for children of all ages—infants, children and adolescents—with cancer, sickle cell disease, hemophilia and other serious blood disorders.
The Tour of Long Beach provides a day of fun and hope for everyone. Participants raise money to support pediatric cancer research as they ride in honor of a patient at the JJCCC. There are many choices for riders:
5-mile Free Family Fun Ride
30-mile Long Beach course
62-mile Long Beach to Newport Beach course
100-mile Cruz Gran Fondo - Sunset Beach, Huntington Beach, Newport Beach and Laguna Beach course
…Don’t want to ride? DONATE to the Sully-Miller team.
Sully-Miller Contracting Company has a booth at the finish line, and will be volunteering onsite as needed. Of course, SMCC will be there greeting riders as they finish.
Capping off the day is a finish line festival with live entertainment, food trucks, beer garden and activities for the kids.
