Lanham, Md. — The National Asphalt Pavement Association (NAPA) announced today that Sully-Miller Contracting Co., of Brea, Calif., has won a 2012 Quality in Construction Award for excellence in construction of an asphalt pavement. The company received its award on Wednesday, Feb. 13, at a ceremony during the association’s 58th Annual Meeting in Scottsdale, Arizona.
The Quality in Construction Award recognizes asphalt pavements of excellence. “The Quality in Construction Award recognizes paving jobs completed in line with best practices and standards known to yield high-quality asphalt pavements,” stated Kurt Bechthold, 2012 Chairman of the NAPA Board of Directors. “This award demonstrates the high quality of work Sully-Miller Contracting Co. is achieving.”
Sully-Miller Contracting Co. won the award for the widening and repairs of I-40 near Needles, Calif. The location of the project — the Mohave Desert — and the difficulty in finding the right source of aggregate to meet project specifications made the project particularly challenging. The expansive clay soil beneath the road’s surface had caused heaving in the preexisting travel lanes, leaving it in a distressed condition; Sully-Miller Contracting Co. used great care in preparing the road for the overlay, including surfacing grinding, and the application of a leveling course. The company did formal partnering with the owner on this project, delivering on schedule a greatly improved roadway that met incentives for its high quality.
The National Asphalt Pavement Association (NAPA) is the only trade association that exclusively represents the interests of the asphalt producer/contractor on the national level with Congress, government agencies, and other national trade and business organizations. NAPA supports an active research program designed to improve the quality of asphalt pavements and paving techniques used in the construction of roads, streets, highways, parking lots, airports, and environmental and recreational facilities. The association provides technical, educational, and marketing materials and information to its members; supplies product information to users and specifiers of paving materials; and conducts training courses. The association, which counts more than 1,100 companies as members, was founded in 1955.
