Project Spotlight: Bicknell Avenue, Santa Monica

Construction Teams up to Build Green Street

Our construction division just completed Santa Monica's First "Green Street." The design and engineering of the Bicknell Avenue project focused on reducing urban runoff to the Santa Monica Bay incorporated many innovative BMPs (Best Management Practices).

Bicknell Avenue Permeable Concrete PourPouring and Compacting Permeable Concrete This project utilized all of our construction specialists; underground, grading, concrete and asphalt.  Our concrete crew's poured permeable concrete in the parking lanes in order to reduce runoff. Joe Armendariz's underground crew installed the infiltration basins to collect the run off and then percolate in to the surrounding soil. We had to protect the existing 80 year old palm trees while installing "Bioswales" in planters. Asphalt for the job came from both of our Blue Diamond Southgate and Inglewood plants. An added benefit to the crews was the view of the beach from across the street.

Santa Monica was awarded the 2009 NPDES Programs - Enviromental Project of the Year Award from the Southern California Chapter of the American Public Works Association (APWA) for this project.

Sully-Miller Contracting is proud to have worked on this important project for the City of Santa Monica.  Responsible building is about the community at large. We are ready and excited to work on more "Green Projects." Overseeing the work were Linda Newton, Estimator / Project Manager, Mike Love, Project Superintendent, Jeremiah Brooks, Project Engineer, Joe Armendariz, Underground Foreman, Mark Ramirez, Concrete Foreman,  and Darren Roth, Project Foreman.
