Project Spotlight: Calabasas Civic Center
When the City of Calabasas was looking to make a statement with their new Civic Center they looked no further than Sully-Miller Contracting. The city planners wanted a rustic red pavement in front of their new Civic Center at Civic Center Way and Park Sorrento. Instead of going with colored concrete the city decided to use colored asphalt.
Sully-Miller teamed up with Blue Diamond Materials to make this special asphalt. The Class C2 asphalt was colored by using a dye, Asphacolor, which was mixed at the Sun Valley plant.
The job was paved on Saturday, July 28th, 2008 in order to minimize inconvenience to the public. Sully-Miller's paving crews to great care took pave the approximately 280 tons, not spilling the material on the new concrete improvements in the area.
In addition to the colored asphalt Sully-Miller paved several streets as part of the 2008 Annual City Wide
Overlay project with rubberized asphalt. Rubberized asphalt uses recycled tires, tennis balls and other rubber products to create a smoother and quieter surface pavement.
