BNSF’s Hobart Yard Proves Challenging for All

Sully-Miller crews built a new roadway between two active rail lines in the Hobart Yard in Commerce. The Hobart Yard is one of many rail yards in the Alameda Corridor that link the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach with the rest of the country.  Unfortunately our crews encountered extremely soft subgrade throughout the work area.

With over 20,000 square yards of soft subgrade in an active rail yard BNSF could not afford the time to over excavate, lime treat or other traditional methods. The suggestion to use Tensar Geogrid and aggregates saved BNSF time and approx. $60,000.

Project foreman, Arnulfo Aguirre said "the Geogrid is challenging to work with, but it solved the problem faster than the other solutions."

Overseeing the work is Roc Schoonover, Project Superintendent, Bob Maulucci, Project Engineer, and Arnulfo Aguirre, Project Foreman.
