Sully-Miller Breaks Ground on the Phase 2 of Atherton Ditch

On Saturday, September 12th, 2009 Long Beach City held a long awaited ground breaking for Phase 2 of the Atherton Ditch project. Councilman Patrick O'Donnell, Assistant City Engineer Phillip Balmeo, and Daryl Supernaw of the Atherton St. Ditch Adjacent Neighborhood Association spoke to residents about the project. Sully-Miller's underground crews have already started construction on this project.

Sully-Miller will be installing a new storm drain pipe along side the existing ditch and then covering the ditch with landscaping. The project is scheduled to be completed by the end of January 2010. The ditch that runs alongside of Atherton Street from Palo Verde Avenue west to McNab Street is not only an eyesore but a safety issue. The area often floods in heavy rains making the ditch not visible. Firemen from Station 22 have fished a number of vehicles out of the ditch over the 55 years it has been there.

This will be the final ditch in the city of Long Beach to be covered up. Sully-Miller is glad to be working on this project. Sully-Miller started in Long Beach 86 years ago.
