Reduction of Greenhouse Gases
Sully-Miller Contracting Company is committed to being a leader in the reduction of Greenhouse Gas emissions by becoming more energy efficient throughout its entire operation. Part of the emissions reduction was acheived by participating in Demand Response Programs and Energy Efficiency Incentive Programs implemented by Southern California Edison.
In 2006, both Blue Diamond Materials and United Rock Products worked directly with an SCE Account Executive and SCE Field Engineers where comprehensive energy efficiency audits were performed. The audits identified energy saving opportunities for Blue Diamond's South Gate, Inglewood, and Irwindale Asphalt plants, as well as, United Rock's Aggregate Plant located in Irwindale. United Rock Products utilized the Demand Response Program by adjusting their operating hours to lower demand, off-peak hours resulting in a significant cost savings. They also implemented CFL lighting retrofits on their plant to reduce energy usage at night. Blue Diamond installed variable frequency drives on conveyors and fan motors at all of their plants. Due to these changes, both Blue Diamond and United Rock Products were eligible to participate in SCE's rebate program.
SCE customers, through its California Energy Action Plan, have been able to save as much as 5 billion kWhs. This is enough energy to power 725,000 homes for an entire year and reduce more than 2 million metric tons of Greenhouse Gas emissions. This is the equivalent of removing 350,000 cars from the road. In 2008, The Sully-Miller Companies were able to reduce its Greenhouse Gas emissions by 378,868 pounds of CO2 by participating in these programs.
