CARB On-Road Diesel Program
Since 2007, Sully-Miller has attended workshops - working with the California Air Resources Board and our associations on the development of the rule that will cover all our off-road diesel equipment. The purpose of this rule is to reduce particulate and NOX emissions from our construction equipment.
Our first task was to take inventory of our fleet and obtain specific data on each piece of equipment. Of prime importance was the engine information including: make, model, serial number, family name, horsepower, year of manufacture, and 'Tier' placement.
In 2006, Taylor Thompsons - a summer intern from Sloan Construction Company - worked with our shop to gather the information. All our equipment had to be inspected and any missing information had to be reconstructed with the help of the manufacturer.
The result? Over 100 pieces of equipment with a total horsepower over 15,000, which put us in the "Large Fleet" size category.
As part of our plan to reduce emissions, compliance will be achieved by replacing the oldest engines with newer pieces of equipment and by adding tail pipe devices called VDECS to other pieces of our equipment. Our current plan is to replace or modify about 12% of our fleet each year to meet the current emission goals for our company.
In December 2008, we also submitted our list of equipment to CARB to which we've received Identification numbers for each piece, part of Sully-Miller Contracting Company's commitment to environmental excellence.
