SULLY-MILLER CONTRACTING CO. WINS NATIONAL AWARDS FOR QUALITY IN ASPHALT PAVING

Lanham, MD - The National Asphalt Pavement Association (NAPA) announced today that Sully-Miller Contracting Co. of Brea, Calif., has won three 2011 Quality in Construction Awards for excellence in construction of an asphalt pavement. The company received their awards at a special ceremony during the association’s 57th Annual Meeting in Palm Desert, Calif.

The Quality in Construction Award recognizes asphalt pavements of excellence. “NAPA selects the recipients of its paving awards using a known set of standards that have been shown to give a good result,” commented Kim Snyder, 2011 Chairman of the NAPA Board of Directors. “The awards demonstrates the high quality of work that Sully-Miller Contracting Co. is achieving.”

Sully-Miller Contracting Co. won the awards for three of their projects last year. The apron pavement rehabilitation at Compton/Woodley Airport. The project consisted of four phases and involved all of the non-movement areas. The company treated the existing subgrade with cement, milled pavement from within the project work limits, and used it to place a 3 inch section of reclaimed pavement, then paved the entire area with 2 to 3 inches of new asphalt pavement.

Sully-Miller held frequent meetings with all stakeholders to reduce any problems on the project. It completed the job under budget and before the original completion date without any conflicts between construction and the airport tenants.

Their work on the rehabilitation of Ramps A and B at Bob Hope Airport in Burbank. Through close coordination with airport engineering and airport operations, the company was able to reduce the phases of the project, which included two commercial air carrier ramps and the taxi lanes associated with each. This reduced the number of joints and produced a smoother, more uniform pavement.

Sully-Miller Contracting Co. performed all paving at night, often laying as much as 8 inches of asphalt in a single area in one night. Many areas paved were small and irregular, adding to the challenge. Despite the obstacles, the company delivered the project on time, within budget and with minimal impact to airport operations.

And finally, their work on the I-710 freeway in South Gate and Lynwood. For some roadway sections, the company used crack and seat techniques; other sections required a full dig-out and reconstruction of the existing pavement. Sully-Miller was supposed to perform the work over 10 extended weekend closures, with all traffic moved to one side of the freeway, but through partnering and careful scheduling, it was able to reduce the closures to seven weekends. The company reduced the owner’s costs for inspection, testing and overhead and reduced inconvenience to the traveling public while producing a smooth, uniform asphalt pavement.
