Sully-Miller & United Rock Products Host Cal State Fullerton Geology Students
This Saturday, November 2nd, Sully-Miller and United Rock Products will play host to a group of students and their professor from Cal State Fullerton.
The students are taking an Environmental Geology course taught by Sean J. Loyd Ph.D. The course is designed to promote exposure to the many aspects of geological-environmental interaction, including natural resource production.
Dr. Loyd reached out to Sully-Miller with the brilliant idea of organizing a tour of a functioning natural resource plant. The students are largely senior level undergraduate students, nearly all of which are geologists and therefore have a good grasp of earth materials. United Rock Products, a Sully-Miller company is the ideal location for such a tour.
United Rock Products has been mining aggregates for nearly 100 years. The tour will take place at their 300-acre site located in Irwindale where virgin aggregate material is processed into sand and gravel through cutting-edge crushing and screening operations.
Students will learn about these production processes as well as the importance of reuse and reclamation as measures to limit environmental impacts and revitalize Irwindale and the surrounding communities.
The tour takes about 2 hours.
